What Is Area Code 201?
Area Code 201 is an area code in the North American Numbering Plan that has been serving the northern area of New Jersey since 1947. It originally served parts of southern and central New Jersey but was split in 2001, creating area code 908 for the southern part of the state.
Area Code 201 is the main area code for several counties in northern New Jersey, including Bergen County (the most populous county in the state), Hudson County, Essex County, and Passaic County. It also includes a portion of Warren County and part of Morris County.
The 201 area code is home to many major cities and towns, including Jersey City, Hoboken, Paterson, Hackensack, Bayonne, and Englewood. These cities are major economic and cultural hubs in the state and are home to some of New Jersey's best-known attractions.
The 201 area code serves close to two million people and covers a total area of over three thousand square miles. It is bordered by two other area codes, 862 and 973, and is part of the overlaying 551 area code.
Area Code 201 is a particularly important area code in the state of New Jersey and has been so since its inception. It serves some of the most populated areas in New Jersey and covers some of the most important cities and towns.
History of Area Code 201
The area code 201 is located in the Northeastern corner of New Jersey. It serves parts of Hudson and Bergen counties, including most of Jersey City, Hackensack, Englewood, and some of the surrounding towns. The area code was created in 1947 during the north/south split of area code 908.
At the time of its inception, area code 201 served all of New Jersey. However, in 1958, area code 609 was split off from 201 to cover South Jersey. In 1997, area code 856 was split off from 201, becoming the first new area code in New Jersey since 1958.
In 2000, the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) began to assign three-digit area codes to regions of the United States. This allowed for an easier understanding of area codes for the general public. As a result, area code 201 was assigned to its current region in Northeastern New Jersey.
Throughout its history, area code 201 has seen several changes as the population and demand for new phone numbers have increased. In 2001, area code 973 was split from area code 201, serving portions of counties in the North, Central, and South Jersey regions.
More recently, the increasing demand for phone numbers in the area code 201 region has led to the introduction of the new 862 area code in 2018. Area code 862 is an “overlay” of the 201 area code, meaning it was created to serve the same geographic area and is used in addition to 201.
As area code 201 continues to experience rapid population growth and increasing demand for new phone numbers, it's likely that the 862 area code will serve as an additional resource in the coming years. As the population of the region grows, so too will the need for further expansion of the current area codes.
Origin of the Area Code 201
The area code 201 was one of the original area codes created in 1947 during the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) division. It was created from a split of area code 908 and served to cover the entire state of New Jersey. It was the first area code in the state and has remained within the jurisdiction of the NANP ever since. In 2000, parts of area code 201 were divided to create area code 551. Today, area code 201 still serves the entire state of New Jersey, with the exception of certain parts of Mercer, Middlesex, and Monmouth counties, which are now served by area code 551. Even though the area code has been divided, area code 201 is still one of the most recognizable area codes within the state of New Jersey.
Split of the Area Code 201
In order to meet the increasing demand for telephone numbers, the area code 201 was split on June 10, 2001, to form area code 551. This split was the first area code split in New Jersey. The new area code 551 covers Bergen and Hudson Counties, while the area code 201 remains in use for Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties. All existing phones in the original service area remained in service, with local calls requiring the use of the correct area code. The split was done with a permissive dialing period to allow customers to get accustomed to the change. All calls made within the area code still require their 7-digit telephone number, while long distance calls must add 1 and the area code.
